Sections

TL;DR; A section is an ordered group of activities inside a course. Sections are how you break a course into chapters. Most courses have 3–8 sections, each containing 3–10 activities. Add them from the course details page; drag to reorder.

Why sections exist

A course without sections would be a single long list of activities, which works fine for a 4-activity course and terribly for a 30-activity course. Sections group related activities into chapters so learners can see the shape of the course at a glance.

Sections also let you label the "flow" of a course — "Introduction," "Core Concepts," "Practice," "Wrap Up" is a recognizable four-section rhythm. Learners know where they are in the course.

Creating a section

On a course's details page, you'll see its current list of sections (empty if you just created the course). Click Add Section. You'll get a form with:

  • Title — what learners will see.
  • Description — optional, shown at the top of the section when a learner opens it.
  • Order — where the section sits relative to the others. New sections are added to the end by default.

Once created, the section appears in the course's section list, ready for activities to be added to it.

A good section structure

Most effective courses follow a predictable structure. For a 30–45-minute course, something like:

  1. Introduction — one or two videos explaining what the course covers and why it matters.
  2. Core concepts — the main content, split into a few smaller sections if needed.
  3. Practice or walkthrough — applying the content to a specific scenario.
  4. Wrap-up and next steps — summary, resources, what to do after.

You don't have to follow that pattern, but notice what it's doing: the first section orients the learner, the middle sections carry the content, and the last section gives closure. Courses that follow a rhythm like that feel more finished than courses that jump straight into content and end abruptly.

Reordering sections

From the section list, you can reorder sections by dragging them. The learner sees sections in the order you set — they usually work through them top to bottom, though nothing stops them from skipping around if the course isn't configured to enforce sequential completion.

Optional sections

Sections can be marked as Optional, just like individual activities. When a section is optional, all of its activities are treated as optional — they appear in the course outline with an "Optional" label and are tracked separately from required completion. Use optional sections for supplementary content (deeper dives, bonus walkthroughs, reference material) that you want available but don't want to count against a learner's required progress.

Editing and deleting sections

Click Edit Section next to a section to change its title, description, or order. Deleting a section deletes all the activities inside it, so be careful — there's no way to recover them after deletion.

How sections show up for learners

When a learner opens a course, they see the section list under the dashboard. Each section is collapsible; clicking it expands to show the activities inside. Section titles should be scannable — a learner should be able to read the section list and understand the course's structure without opening anything.

How many activities per section?

There's no hard rule, but some guidance:

  • 2 or fewer activities per section often feels anemic. If a section has one activity, ask yourself whether it needs to be its own section at all.
  • 3–8 activities is the sweet spot for most courses.
  • More than 10 activities per section starts to feel like a long list. Split it.

The point of sections is to create visual breathing room. If every section has the same density of content, the course feels balanced.
