Departments
TL;DR; Creating and enabling a department is something a Company Administrator does themselves, inside their own company. Deleting one only works while it's empty — the button tells you exactly what's still in it if it isn't.
Before you start
You need a company that already has Learn turned on — see Set up a company if it doesn't yet.
Steps
From the company dashboard, select Create Department. The company is fixed (shown, not chosen), so you only fill in a Department Name and a TinyUrl — it auto-suggests one from the name when you click into the field, and cleans it up when you click away. The TinyUrl only has to be unique within the company.
If a department already exists without Learn, use Enable Existing from the same company dashboard instead of creating a new one.
Open a department to see its dashboard: Learn status, the date Learn was turned on, and side-by-side panels for its Courses and its Libraries, each with a count and a way to create or view them.
Edit changes the department's Name and TinyUrl.
Delete only works on an empty department — no members, projects, subscriptions, courses, or libraries. If it isn't empty, the button stays visible but disabled, and hovering it tells you exactly what's blocking it, for example: "Still holds 2 course(s), 1 librar(y/ies). Remove those first." When it is empty, deleting asks you to confirm once — "This cannot be undone. The department is empty, so nothing else will be removed with it." — and it's a hard delete, not a trash entry.
What this doesn't do
An archived library still counts as "held" — archiving hides a library but keeps its files, so it still blocks the delete. Only libraries that have been moved to the trash stop counting: a department can end up deletable even with recently deleted libraries still in their 30-day retention window underneath it.
Common issues
The Delete button won't do anything. — It's disabled, not broken. Hover it to see what's still attached; clear those out first.
