Customer Workspaces
TL;DR; "Companies" and "Customer Workspaces" are two different consoles over the same company record. One creates the bare tenant; the other turns Learn on for it. Confusing the two is the easiest mistake to make here.
Before you start
Nothing — this is where a customer relationship starts.
Steps
Companies (under System Management) creates the bare tenant record: a Name and a Website, nothing else. This alone doesn't give the customer anything to sign into — it's just the row everything else attaches to. The only thing editable afterward is the Website; the Name is looked up by other flows and has no standalone Edit.
Customer Workspaces is the separate console that turns a bare company into something usable: Enable Learn attaches Learn to an existing company, or Create builds a brand-new company with Learn already attached. Enabling assigns the company a TinyUrl (its URL slug) that must be unique across every Learn company. Once enabled, the note on the page is accurate: "After enabling, you can add departments and courses" — enabling by itself creates no departments, courses, or default roles.
If a company already had Learn enabled once and it was turned off, re-enabling it reuses its original identity rather than starting fresh — nothing about its history is lost by disabling and re-enabling.
Edit (from Customer Workspaces) changes the company's Name and its TinyUrl together. Changing the TinyUrl is disruptive — every existing link to that company's Learn pages uses the old one.
What this doesn't do
There's no button anywhere in the product to turn Learn back off for a company once it's on. Whatever needs undoing has to be handled another way — this console only turns it on.
Deleting a company (from the Companies console) only works once it has zero departments — the confirmation page states exactly how many departments, members, and projects are still attached when it refuses.
Common issues
A company exists but nobody can sign in to it. — Check whether Learn was ever enabled for it. A bare company created without ever visiting Customer Workspaces has no TinyUrl and nothing for anyone to sign into.
